A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
